The Summer Diaries is a series of photo journal/diary entries from my 2018 Summer trip in Europe and South East Asia. Click here to read the previous entry.
Cabrils meant walks in the forest by Sorch's house, bonding with her mum and aunts, and pure relaxation. Most days, we would take a walk to the abandoned pools and buildings of a rehabilitation center from the 1980s.
We watched a young couple and their son, William and tried to place their accents. William's dad was covered in tattoos and they played in the sand, then running to the sea to wash it off.
On our second day, we went to the beach. European beaches are so beautiful and liberating. We set up underneath a blue and white striped umbrella, and spent four hours by the sea. Beaches are great for people watching. Everyone is having fun.
I also photographed an older lady, who sat in a bikini with a full face of makeup and a tattoo on her shoulder. She was with three others, who seemed to be her husband and friends. It made me so happy to see them all enjoying their time together.
On Sorcha's birthday, we took the train to Barcelona for the day. Immediately, we hear a riots. Today's riot was taxi centered. They were all of strike, throwing smoke bombs and chanting. We had lunch at a small cafe down a street by La Rambla. I bought Sorch a bag of bird feed by Plaza Catalunya and watched her become the pigeon queen. We attempted a photo booth shoot, but the photos were terrible. We walked around the city for hours before returning to Cabrils for a pizzeria dinner with Sorch's mum and aunts. Sinead, the eldest aunt who is full of great stories, debated social media and security and Seb and I swam in the pool with her past midnight.
We spent the rest of our time in Cabrils in the forest and by the pool, dancing and swimming. It was unreal to be in Spain with friends from Hanoi. I am so grateful for the time that we had. I can still smell the lavender and hear the bees, buzzing from the purple plant.
Cabrils brought us together. Sorch and I became friends in New York whilst living in Hanoi and two years later, I was staying with her in Cabrils. Travel with your friends whenever given the chance, it is so special.
