Meet Merryn

Written by Eva Barnsley

I came across Merryn's wonderfully unique voice some time ago, in 2012 when a friend sent me a snapchat of herself singing along to 'Devil By Her Side', by Potato Potato. The song immediately awoken an interest in folk music and sent me into an obsession. Little did I know, four years later, there would no longer be such band as Potato Potato, nor that I would have the chance to ask Merryn Jeann a few questions about her lifestyle and musical interest...
3 QUICKIES:
What's your favourite song at the moment?
Calls by Robert Glasper Experiment featuring Jill Scott.

What's your favourite fashion item in your wardrobe?
Some funky colourful paisley curtain pants I found at a flea market in NY. Curtain doesn't make them sound appealing but it's the only way I can think to describe them...

What's your favourite movie?I'm not a huge movie buff but I've just starting watching a foreign film each night.  This week I've watched  'The Dream Life of Angels' and 'A Separation', tonight I'm going to watch 'Un Homme et Une Femme'.

THE JUICIER STUFF:

When did you start creating music? What inspired you to do so?

I've been making tunes  since I was about 14, I'm not really sure what inspired me, I've just always been in love with music and thought I'd give it a whirl.
Listening back to the first song I put on the www, I'm rather horrified. It was pretty heinous, but hey, I grew up a little and stopped writing soppy love songs about boyfriends I had never even had...

What inspires you to currently make music?

My observations and thoughts are things I find very precious when it comes to writing. Most songs are about my observations of people, my connection with them, big ideas of existence... (I wrote one love song and I always mumble the words when I sing it. I Love a good heartwarming love song, but I naturally stay clear of writing any myself...)
It was super cool to live overseas last year. I was travelling from Canada via America to the UK/EU, with people and solo as well.
I guess we are all just plodding along existing in the present  and  although it was beautiful to see and hear fresh things, it just felt like my  adventures were flowing the way they were meant to, regardless of how 'wow' the experiences were...
So yeah, it's been sweet coming home and finally having some time to think about all the crazy amazing things I was blessed with over the last 12months.

What has been your best gig yet?

My two favourite gigs were with Tora at Falls Festival on NYE a couple of years back. There were no other main acts so a heap of people filled the tent, it was my first time using a wireless mic so I could easily groove around on stage and it just felt cool to feel at home on a big stage with my homies.
But I think my real favourite gig was with Potato Potato at the 2014 Mullumbimby Music Festival. It was our first gig in months and months/ our last gig before we all moved overseas and there was something about it that just felt heavenly.
I'd been listening to a lot of electronic music /hiphop and I forgot how much I loved folk music. When we started belting out the harmonies I remembered that I missed playing it (very much)!

Do you prefer to work with a group, in a band or by yourself?

I like both. I love to vibe off others and collab ideas. I find I can play for hours if I'm with other people.
If I'm in the mood I really enjoy to play and write by myself, but I have to be feeling a little more motivated.

What do you do to get your creative juices flowing?

I don't really know... If I'm feeling it that's good, if not I'll try and write little poems and see if there's any luck there.

What advice would you give to people who are a little too afraid to step outside their comfort zone and show the world their true souls?

Man, fucking yolo!
I don't mean it in a crazy 'let's get drunk way', but in a 'we've been gifted breathe and emotion' kind of way.
It's a blessing to exist, you are your body, you are your soul. No moment is the same and time will keep rolling over, so embrace yourself with all the love.
I've been finding that love for myself and I think I've finally gotten there by accepting my skin, what I believe in and by manifesting creations and connections with things that feed my soul.

What are three essentials for you to be the person you are?

Creativity, to share and connect and to accept every feel amongst the +\-
I just think it's so important  to make the most of it all.

What have you got to come in the future?

An EP! In working on it now with a bunch of killer beings. I'll be sharing it sometime this year!
Other things are touring Australia with Tora on their support with Rufus, some more collaborations with artists, and who knows what else... Take it as it comes yo!
