Meet Devyn

Written by Eva Barnsley.

Who are you?
I am Devyn Crimson, and "who is that" you may ask-- well, I am a freelance stylist, makeup artist, writer, and sometimes model with a passion for rock 'n' roll (especially that of the 60s and 70s).

Where is home?
My hometown is a tiny village of 270 some people in North Western Wisconsin, but about a year and a half ago I migrated to the lovely city of Chicago where I live with my guitar wielding boyfriend.

What's your favourite song at the moment?

This is such a hard question as I usually have a playlist of songs that I really get into at one specific time! Although, if I had to pick what I have been grooving to most lately it would be Marie Douceur - Marie Colere by Marie Laforet.

What's your favourite movie?

My favorite movie of all time is probably The Boat That Rocked. I love the soundtrack for obvious reasons, and the styling is so good! They really nailed the 1960s vibe and characters.

Three important things in your life...
Three important things in my life would be people (family, friends, etc. I am a social person), fashion which is my biggest creative outlet, and music which inspires my fashion.

Take us through a typical day in your life...

There is never a 'typical day' in my life, to be honest. I hate routine and get really bored with it-- maybe that is why I like to do a little of everything to keep it all interesting. However, I will try to give a peak into my day to day life when I am not traveling or working on a special freelance project. I usually wake up around 7:30am on my own and I'll either go to bed for another hour and a half or I'll get up to shower. I make breakfast while Andrew, my boyfriend, washes up any dishes from dinner, and then we eat while looking at news related things or education videos on the internet. I will do yoga and Andrew gets right to work on his youtube project. I usually meditate before or after yoga and if the weather is nice I prefer to sit on the grass, otherwise I sit in the studio with Andrew. After exercising the ole mind & body, I change my clothes and put on makeup if I am going to that day. I do whatever work I have planned for that day at this point. I like to write to do lists for myself; I have a notebook for different work categories to help stay organized. While working I like to switch between different projects to spread out the productivity a little-- you know I don't want to neglect anything so you have to just manage your time. I usually will have some sewing to do, I have daily work to do with GroupieU, lots of messages to respond to between Instagram, email, texts, etc..., and then other personal or not projects that aren't always reoccurring. Plenty of days, I head up to the north side of the city to spend the day with my lovely friend and muse to many, Olivia, and we work on our own projects while hanging out at her place... or go thrifting, it's one of the two. When dinner time rolls around I will cook again or we will go get something if we are both really tired. Andrew and I eat together and usually watch a movie or a show via Netflix (we don't have television). When dinner is over we usually both get back to work-- no lie. It is pretty rare when we "take the night off". We are both very driven and actually love our work so I mean what else are we going to do? Haha! At this point I try to have released myself from anything that isn't a personal project in order to create some kind of a "work day" for myself. When it isn't winter we like to take walks to this park by our house in the evening at some point as well. I usually start falling asleep around midnight which is when we both then clean up and go to bed.

How would you describe your style?

I try to be historically accurate most of the time. I don't want to look costume-y (as much as that is possible). I love fashion history and learning about different trends and subcultures of the time which I think helps to shape my own style. I can't say anything specific like "mod" because that depends on my mood really. In the morning, I like to listen to music while I get ready and whatever music I am feeling that day is how I will create my outfit. Each outfit is like a way to display a different versions of myself and the music helps to tell the story! However, it's always 60s & 70s style-- early 60s through mid 70s really and that's about where I hop off the train though, fashion wise. I like some 90s because the 1990s did the 60s a lot just in a really funky way which I can get down with.

Tell us about meeting Pamela Des Barres!

Pamela Des Barres is the groupie queen of the 1960s. She was a muse to some of the biggest rock stars of the time including Jimmy Page, Gram Parsons, Mick Jagger, etc! Not only is her presence inspiring to many, she is a fantastic writer, actress, and even musician during her time of the GTOs-- a band created of Miss Pamela and her friends by Frank Zappa. She has 5 books out and one album-- Permanent Damage which you can listen to on youtube! I first heard of Pamela when I came across her documentary in 2016. I was so fascinated by her and the women she interviewed. They had inside stories that no one else had and that was the stuff I wanted to hear about! Quickly, Miss Pamela became one of my biggest inspirations in fashion. The girl knows how to dress! I was fascinated by her vintage and handmade clothes that she would wear to shows and the way she would paint her eyes all up. I really related to her. Fast forward to last year and her company, GroupieU, was looking for a social media intern. I applied, and got the position to run their Instagram account and since then I have worked my way up to social media coordinator and sometimes graphic designer! I talk to Pamela here and there about business stuff but I got to meet her in person when she came to Chicago for one of her writing classes. Cynthia Plaster Caster (Plaster Casters of Chicago!!!) was there that night too and it was so magical to get to sit with them both and talk music! The next morning I picked up Miss Pamela and drove her to the airport and we got to talk more over some coffee on the ride. It was lovely! She said I looked like Pattie Boyd and she loved my music selection-- she thought it was a sirius xm station! I was flattered to say the least!

Who/what inspires you in your everyday life?

Music and nature inspire me the most for my "what" category. I am almost always listening to music and I love creating mood playlists. I also grew up in a rural area so I really appreciate nature and peace when I am at home. As for "who" my boyfriend is a big one. He is such a hard worker and in most ways the opposite of me so his view on things is always refreshing and sometimes eye opening for me. My friends are also some of my muses; I surround myself with people who are so talented in different ways and are really reaching for their dreams which is what it's all about. My mom has been my muse since day one. She has always created a safe place to experiment and learn and grow. She is also a creative genius so being around her I try to learn a thing or two.

You work several jobs, which is your favourite? What are the best experiences that you have had as a result of your work?
Oh geez to pick a favorite... I would say at the moment my favorite thing to do is styling. I love working with music and fashion at the same time so styling bands and helping them look really awesome on stage is my favorite! All of my work is awesome though! Like I mentioned before I met one of my style icons, Pamela Des Barres, through GroupieU, my writing has helped me travel more, and working with vintage clothes has taught me more about fashion. The best thing though is the people that write to me and tell me I have inspired them in some way, and it is nice that people like what I do and that they also get something out of it whether it's just amusement or courage or ideas!
