Have you ever been asked that question?
And how did you respond?
“Yes?”
I have never been so unsure about any answer. Although the majority of the time, I can give an exact definition of “being alone’, I often misuse it.
There are similarities between “alone” and “lonely” but they can’t replace each other.
Loneliness is not 'aloneness'. Being alone is when you are at a party, surrounded by so many people yet you still do not enjoy it; you don’t know who to dance with, to talk to, to drink with: you feel like you are still missing something – someone. Loneliness is when you are in your room by yourself, feeling sad and empty, but you know the moment you walk outside, there will always be someone there for you. However, this article is not about being sorry for yourself because you ARE actually alone, or about the definition of “alone” and “lonely”, and definitely not to judge anyone, but to have you face up to the feeling of being either. If you are feeling lonely, then it is alright, we all have a time in our life when we feel like that.
This might be a bit cliché but you must remember: somebody is there for you. Have a conversation with someone you haven’t met in a while, create new relationships, go to events, join new communities and organizations, or even play games and have online friends. Surround yourself with people, walk outside that room, which is not that difficult when you think about it.What about being alone? This is the one thing you can’t really do something about.
'Aloneness' is already there, it takes over you, but you might be able to make friend with it. Sometimes, you just want to be alone, not like the way I’ve explained but you may enjoy being by yourself and the simple things. Lay down on your comfy sofa, play some music, read the book you haven’t even glanced through because you have been too busy scrolling through social media or too caught up in work. Make yourself breakfast after a long time of only having coffee. This time, make the whole meal; pancakes, cereal, French toast… The point is to kind of “take advantage” of it, do something you have never done by yourself, such as going to the cinema, amusement parks, going for a trip…
And that’s it, just want to spread some positive vibes over here, loads of love!
