State the three most important things in your life…
Me, my family, my art.
What/Who are your largest musical inspirations?
I have a lot of musical influences. Forever and always influenced by Amy Winehouse, Solange, Ms Lauryn Hill, Gwen Stefani, Pharrell, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, Etta James, Frank Ocean. Currently I’m super inspired by Jesse Reyez, SZA, Sabrina Claudio, EARTHGANG, Miguel, Nick Hackim, Raury. I’d say right now my most played album is probably Scum Fuck Flower Boy by Tyler, The Creator. I really admire and respect any artist that trusts themselves enough to push the boundaries and are focused on exceeding their own expectations as a creative, because that’s where the magic comes from.
Tell us about the move to LA...
I felt as though there were more opportunities [in Australia] for me as writer and artist to explore, so when I got the chance to get my visa, I took it. It has bought me a lot of perspective as a young woman, especially in the industry, new friends, and a lot of amazing music. The hardest part has definitely been leaving my family, and my home, but I’m starting to feel grounded here and am finding balance.
How did you begin your career as an artist?
I started writing music when I was about 12 when I got a guitar for my birthday. It evolved into meeting writers and musicians and finding cheap studio time to record the songs I wrote with real musicians. My parents have always been so supportive, my mum was my manager when I was a teenager, but it effected our relationship as mother and daughter. I think my advice would be to just take it slow, focus on your self growth and spiritual growth before anything else, because amazing art comes from finding your own truth and creating a projection of your inner self.
What inspired your latest single, Lifetime?
It was produced by my good friend Deaneaux (@UhOhIt’sDeaneaux), I wrote it when I first moved to LA in June. The song is about the chase that you and someone are on at the start of a relationship. The back and forth, and lust/want of each other. It’s about being ride or die for that one person because you know that you have been lovers in previous lifetimes, it’s something worth fighting for.
Describe your fashion style and its origins…
I would say my style is a combination of my younger sneaker head, tomboy, self, and also now learning my body and own style as I become more of a woman. I definitely see fashion as art, and that is a factor in how I dress myself day to day.
Why did you decide to shave your head?
I felt like for years my hair was my ‘look’, I feel like I kind of hid behind it now. I was sick of constantly having to get my hair colored and cut contasntly to maintain it, so one day I woke up and I decided I was over it. I went to the salon and just went for it, and thank god it look okay haha!
What advice can you give to others trying to find their own style?
Connect to yourself, your real self, go within, and remember who you are, and what makes you happy and whole. Once you reconnect, you will feel a trust for yourself and who you are like never before.
