Meet Yazz

Written by Eva Barnsley

Yazz Jansen is a wild, creative, and firey 21 year old from Australia. With a fun and groovy sense of fashion; a clutter of leopard print and red, Yazz caught my eye. In this interview, she talks about her website, photography, creativity, style and New York City.

Who are you?
Yazz Jansen, Artist and human bean living in NYC.

How old are you?
21

Where is home?
Currently New York, originally from Brisbane, Australia.

What is your favourite song at the moment?
Currently Queens of The Stone Age new album is on repeat. Otherwise favorite song at the moment is Sugar For The Pill, Slow Dive - just saw them live in New York and they made my heart singgggggg.

What is your favourite movie?
Donnie Darko

State the three most important things in your life…
Relationships. Happiness. Consciousness. Photography

What inspires you?
My largest inspirations come from a range from a variety of artists, actors/musicians, for style, for art, for everything: All of the people that I surround myself with. Debbie, Harry, Devon, Aoki, Sid, Vicious (That dude couldn’t even play an instrument). I'm a Pinterest bitch.

Tell us about your website...
I post my film photography and any other creative endeavors that I do, which are mostly photography, creative direction, styling, editing/graphic design and film. It’s interesting to me because there is a lot that people don’t know about what I do, solely due to a lot of work that I have done here in NY that I haven’t published. I held back for the longest time out of self criticism. But now I’m posting all kinds of shit. Not so mysterious anymore I guess.. It’s mostly photos of my friends because they inspire me the most, otherwise I play around on photoshop and edit edit edit.

Why do you shoot on film?
Because when I go to the store to pick up a roll I’m always sure to get a surprise. It’s so easy nowadays to snap a photo and forget about it, just another photo on the camera roll that you flick past without even thinking about that memory, it loses its ability to give you emotional recall . On film, I have 36 shots and I gotta make them all count. Plus, I love getting the physical copy to have and hold and store forever. I keep a box under my bed with all my develops. First thing I’d grab in a fire for sure.

How do you stay inspired?
Not dwelling on day to day failures. Not dwelling on rejection. I have above my bed a piece of paper that I see every morning when I wake up: ‘Short term failure versus. A lifetime of not knowing. I go into each day not holding back or being afraid of any failures because you never know anything until you try/put yourself out there. My advice: invest in books & artwork. Knowledge is power = inspiration.

Describe your style and its origins…
A little bit of everything and anything. My mother was fashionable growing up and I’ve been around fashion all of my life. My style is so dependent on my mood/the weather. Black always. Sometimes I’ll feel spicy and throw on a crazy leopard floor length trench coat and pink shades and im out the door on my way grocery shopping HAHA. Spice up ur life.

Is fashion important to you?
So incredibly important to me. You can definitely claim power through fashion. The first time I remember claiming power through clothes was in grade 7 at my all girls christian school and wore a bright yellow pair of doc Martens. Everyone hated them and I absolutely loved it. My first ‘fuck you’ to the system and what people expected of me was through a pair of shoes.

What brought you to New York?
Acting school. Theatre is close to my heart and always will be. I’m currently in an off-off broadway show and I rehearse/perform in Times Sq so that’s cool. • Tips for moving to NY? Go to galleries. Keep on moving with the crowd, don’t fall behind. Gotta stay strong, its easy to feel very alone. Live in Brooklyn.

What is it like living in NY?
So much vegan food! Great people! I love that everyone’s doing their own thing and making it work for themselves. Temperamental and extremely polarizing weather. No beaches. :(
