Summer Diaries Part 6: The End

Written by Eva Barnsley.

The Summer Diaries is a series of photo journal/diary entries from my 2018 Summer trip in Europe and South East Asia. Click here to read the previous entry.

The train to Seville was easy. I slept on Seb's shoulder for most of the trip. Once in Seville, we walked to his apartment which was a much longer and hotter journey than Seb had remembered. Turns out Seville is one of the hottest places in Europe, and we were there during a heat wave. Once in the apartment, we set up Connect Four in the lounge room and watched the sun create shadows over the floor.

We spent other days walking through the small brick streets of Seville. It was as if we were in a film; watching nuns walk around through picturesque lanes decorated with the Spanish flag. We walked to Las Setas, also known as 'the mushrooms'. They made for great photos, but the heat had conquered us and we didn't go up to see the view.

We also visited the Alcázar which was so stunning, so beautiful. It is the oldest royal palace to still be in use today; the royal family uses the top floors. Everything was so grand, so spectacular. The buildings were glowing in the sun.

We got lost in the maze of the garden and as I started getting frustrated, a peacock walked out of nowhere. It lead us to another part of the maze before we gave up and climbed through some trees. We sat in the gardens and talked and ate peaches. Fruit is a European Summer essential, especially when you are traveling with little money. I had missed the peach, melon and berry experience while living in Vietnam.

We most often ate in the apartment; cereal, pasta, frozen pizza, melon and serrano, two euro bottled sangria and mushrooms. We stayed up watching reruns of Australian reality show 'House Rules' and Family Guy while one of us played the Sims. We woke up late and at that time it would be like walking into a hair dryer had we left the house so we stayed in ate ate fruit as I journaled. As the sun slowly set, we would leave the house and walk around the deserted streets. Seb called this time "tea time" when he was young because it is all so golden. One night, we sat up watching tv past midnight and watched a Spanish tarotista who answered disturbing and chilling phone calls. We were very close to calling her, but something made us decide against it.

From Seville, we went to Granada, where Seb's grandparents live. They were so welcoming, and made us so much food which was a change from the 2-euro food that we had been eating by ourselves. We sat outside and drank beer with his grandfather, Antonio, who showed us his homemade smoking device; a peg with pins nailed inside which apparently act as a filter. But don't smoke kids. The animals there were so sweet. Blanca was Seb's childhood dog that his family left with his grandfather when they moved abroad. The marmalade cat was slightly cross eyed and very comical. Peggy, a white toy poodle was more than just a dog. She understood everything that Antonio said to her (in Spanish).

After Granada, we went to the beach - Almunecar. My roll of film turned out underexposed and we didn't film anything, so Almunecar memories are all within Seb and my minds. I don't mind. After Spain, we flew back to Vietnam where I spent a few weeks, and then I flew to Malaysia where I now live. My Summer was so beautiful, the best so far. I am so grateful for the experience, and for the people that shared it with me. Thank you for reading the Summer Diaries. See you next year.
