Meet Jade

Written by Eva Barnsley.

Jade Dandy is a psychedelic digital artist who I discovered on Instagram. Her work is so fun, colourful and vibrant and centers around some incredible figures from the 1960's and 1970's. In an interview with AAE, Jade talks about her attraction to counterculture, and her creative process when making her art.

Who are you?
My name is Jade Dandy, digital artist and collage creator. I’m an old soul & day dreamer obsessed with the psychedelic 60’s and 70’s. I could swear I was at Woodstock once upon a time.

Where is home?
I come from a picturesque town by the sea called New Plymouth in New Zealand. Surrounded by lush green nature and a stunning 8,000 ft mountain! It’s a beautiful place.

What's your favourite song at the moment?

I’ve had a few favourites on repeat lately but currently my most played song is ‘Alone’ by The Bee Gees. It has a great feel-good Rythm to it!

What's your favourite movie?

Ooh this is a hard one! One of my absolute favourites is a psychedelic 60’s movie called ‘Psych-Out’ starring a handsome young Jack Nicholson & set in one of my favourite places on earth, San Francisco!

Three important things in your life...

I would have to say- Family, Music, Art & Nature (oops I know, I cheated..)

What attracts you to the 1960s and 1970s?

Firstly, the music! So many legendary musicians came from those times and created absolute iconic music! I grew up listening to these eras & it definitely sparked off my love for those golden days. I was particularly drawn to Hippies & everything they stood for such as peace, love, unity and opposing war which started the iconic Peace Movement in the early 60’s. Apart from those reasons I adore the bright, weird and wonderful fashion! I wish clothes were still made as colourful & unique as they were back then.

What process do you go through when creating your collages?

I will usually make a collage based on whoever I’ve been inspired by or listening to a lot, I pick a favourite song or attribute of that person/band and create around those ideas. Once I have some sort of image in my mind I cut out all my images via photoshop & piece them all together like a puzzle.

What inspires your creations?

Aside from my favourite musicians I take a lot of inspiration from certain themes of the 60’s and 70’s such as Flower Power, Disco days and bright funky colour ways.

Growing up in beautiful New Zealand I am also inspired by the beauty of nature which I love to combine with my illustrations.

How do you deal with creative blocks?

Unfortunately this can happen quite often if I’m not in the right head space/environment so I’ve found that stepping away, taking a break & exploring somewhere new really helps refresh the creative buzz. Trying out a new creative outlet is also a great way to get back into it!

What are you favourite pieces that you have made? Why?

One of my favourite pieces is a collage I made of Joni Mitchell. It combines elements of nature & illustration that I feel portray her well. Joni is such a talented & beautiful soul who has flower child written all over her! This piece flowed very easily and I particularly love the vibrant retro-inspired colours.
