La Mujer - Peru Photo Journal

Written by Sofia Bant

"A poem about seeking love in the right places. A retelling of a trip to Lima, my long lost city, the woman who cared for me when I needed it."

Sofia travelled to Lima, Peru during December '17/January '18. With her film camera and body, she walked the streets of Lima and photographed the city that she loves.

I watch the waves crashing into a crowd of hot people eating the food of the Gods while I wait for her
I am in awe of this mystery
A celestial face with wide open eyes
We walked hand in hand, tears in eyes, how I missed her
Barefoot we stared in silence, naked, pulse under skin brown, pierced by nothing
A heart cracked by the beat of absence
Where do the questions go that I ask her?
Why does she not send them through to him?
I love her colour, I love her waters, I love the kiss of home she lays on me
I wish she would let him see me, but she doesn’t
He doesn’t, more nothing, more silence
And I looked to the colour, the waters, the kisses of home pressed to me
That is not him,
That is my city, my blood
That is people who see me
Lima is hard to be in, hard to walk with, hard to love, easy to miss, easy to cry for
I stand still, stop running
My father is not a destination I will ever reach
And I look to the colour, the waters, the kisses of home pressed to me
And I will wait for her again
And we will walk and we will love
And I will stop asking her the questions that she has held for me all these years, for she is right, the answers are nothing
She opens her hand, one foot in front of the other, I join the hot crowd
And alongside the crashing waves, I eat the food of the Gods
