Dear January

Written by Eva Barnsley

Dear January,
From your first moments you brought new people into my life whom I am grateful for. You have reminded me of the importance of strength, persistence and love.

Long dresses - I recently bought a striped long baggy dress from Zara and have barely stopped wearing it since. I throw it on with big jumpers over the top, disregarding any body fitting fashion.
Earthy tones - Last month I mentioned wearing the colour red and funky earrings, a moment of vibrancy. This month, however, I have draped myself in browns and my father's old suede jackets.

The End of the F***king World - Netflix's new series is short enough to binge in one sitting, which is exactly what I did. Alyssa's fashion and the overall aesthetic of the series is great, and the dark comedy of the film helps to depict life as a messed up teenager.

Ladybird - Continuing with the coming of age, teenage film, Ladybird is actress Greta Gerwig's directorial debut. There was controversy at the 2018 Golden Globes after Gerwig was not even nominated for the Best Director, nor was any female. The film perfectly portrays growing up as a teenager and the relationship between mother and daughter.

Create a space - I bought a couch and coffee table set this month. Carrying it upstairs to my bedroom with my friends was exciting, and we were relieved once it was set up. Creating a space or redecorating is incredibly relaxing. I have barely left my new couch, it gave me a place to read, write, work, relax and this is essential.

Read - "I wish I read more." I have heard this too many times. From myself, and from those around me. So let's just do it! I have began to read before bed. Turning my phone off and providing time to sit down and read has given me a lot of peace.

The Power of Now - A few years ago I bought Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment. I struggled to read it as it is extremely complex and mind twisting, however, with a clearer mindset I have recently begun to read the entire book. Going into it, it's important to understand that you do not have to believe everything that is said as this is one perspective of spirituality, but it is definitely an enlightening book.

For the first month of the year, not much has changed since December, hence the short monthly post, but I'll see you soon February.
